Rocky Mountain School District No. 6

Feeding Futures

In 2023, the Government of British Columbia announced $214 million of 3 years for Feeding Futures, the largest investment in school food programs in the province's history. Feeding Futures Funding is provided to all school districts to support students who need it most by delivering school food programs in a way that reduces stigma.

Rocky Mountain School District (RMSD) has also identified a need to collaborate with community partners to enhance food security, and we are proud to partner with organizations in Golden, Invermere, and Kimberly, as well as regional, provincial, and national organizations. These partnerships all help in the large task of eliminating food insecurity in our region and our aim is to do so in an equitable, accessible, and non-stigmatizing manner.

In 2024, RMSD hired Eric Larocque as the first School Food Coordinator, responsible for consolidating and coordinating food programming in our district. His background is in food service, logistics, and in the food security sector, working to find solutions for rural and remote communities to help expand access to nutritious and culturally appropriate food. Eric feels that the key to success for RMSD is understanding the needs and resources available in each community and school and working within those parameters to find solutions for food access.

In RMSD we are prioritizing:

  • The expansion of existing daily breakfast programs and snacks to ensure that every student who needs them has access to nutritious, stigma-free options.
  • BC and locally sourced foods when possible and supporting programs to reduce environmental impact and minimize food waste
  • The improvement of nutritious offerings and enhancement of food safety practices
  • The integration of food programs with culturally inclusive practices that promote all food ways
  • The strengthening of existing community partnerships (PAC, community groups, food banks) and exploring new partnerships

More information is to come as we continue to build this program. If you have any questions or wish to support it, please reach out to Eric via email (eric.larocque@sd6.bc.ca).
