This past school year, 23 international students from Germany, Spain, Italy, Greenland, and Australia spent 3 to 10 months studying at Golden Secondary School and exploring Golden. It was a pleasure and privilege to host these students as they bring diversity to our small mountain towns and give us the opportunity to learn about different cultures, traditions, and perspectives while reflecting on our own cultures as well. This study abroad program gives young people the opportunity to expand their horizons as they gain life experience learning to adapt to a different lifestyle, culture and education system.

Our international students achieved great milestones academically, personally, and professionally this past year. We had students committed and passionate about their work with the local Fire Department through the Work Experience program at GSS and who may now pursue a career as a firefighter. Many of our students volunteered weekly in the community either at hockey games or volunteering as Santa’s elves for Christmas. Lots of our students were involved in school sports and even got on the podium for sporting events.

Before our students departed, we asked them what they liked about Golden, and many said that the people are friendly, supportive, and accepting; they liked the town; they liked being in nature with wildlife and recreation opportunities; and they loved the ski resort. One student liked the feeling of being able to say ‘Hi’ to everyone and share happy experiences in the community. Another student said he would recommend Golden to other students because it was the best time he’s ever had!

We congratulate our students for their hard work, dedication, and commitment to pursuing their goals and wish them continued joy, growth, and fond memories of their time in Golden. We also want to thank our host families for opening their doors and hearts to their students and for giving them the support they needed for a successful stay. Many of our host families return each year, but of course, there’s always room for more. Locals who are interested in hosting an international student for 3 to 10 months during the 2024-25 school year should note that they would be compensated $1000/month for hosting and can contact the local homestay coordinator at 250-272-6040 for more information.
