Rocky Mountain School District joins the nation in mourning the passing of Justice Murray Sinclair, esteemed leader and advocate for Indigenous rights in Canada. Justice Sinclair, the first Indigenous judge appointed in Manitoba, devoted his career to justice, reconciliation, and equality. His work as chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) brought to light the experiences of residential school survivors and fostered a call to action for Canadians to build a more inclusive future.
Justice Sinclair’s legacy continues to inspire communities across the country. The 94 Calls to Action in the TRC report have guided many educational institutions, including our school district, in our commitment to fostering understanding and respect for Indigenous culture, history, and perspectives. Justice Sinclair’s words remind us that “education got us into this mess, and education will get us out.”
In honor of Justice Sinclair’s contributions and his lifelong dedication to reconciliation, flags across our school district will be lowered to half-mast today, November 5th, as well as the day of his funeral or memorial service. We encourage staff, learners, and families to reflect on his legacy and continue to support the journey toward a just and equitable society for all.
